What is Pneumococcal Disease?

Pneumococcal disease is a respiratory illness which increases in prevalence during the winter months.

The most common cause of these illnesses is the bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia.

Many people carry these bacteria in their nose and throat without causing harm but when they invade the lungs or bloodstream they can cause serious infection.

The infection is spread from person to person in droplets by coughing, sneezing or close contact.
Who Should Get the Pneumococcal Vaccine?

Individual aged 65 and over.
-
Anyone over the age of 18 who falls into these risk categories below:
- ​Diabetes
- Chronic lung, heart, liver or kidney disease
- Chronic neurological conditions
- Cochlear implants (or about to get cochlear implants)
- A weak immune system because of a disease or treatment, including cancer patients
- HIV
- Problems with their spleen or if they've had their spleen removed

Potential Side Effects:
The most common side effects are:

Pain.

Redness on some skin tones.

Swelling where the injection was given.

Headaches.
-
Tiredness.
-
Muscle aches.
-
Severe allergic reactions are very rare.
-
No other serious side effects have been reported for the vaccine.

You cannot get pneumococcal disease from the vaccine as it does not contain live bacteria.
Who Should Not Get the Pneumonia Vaccine

The PPV23 vaccine is not recommended for healthy children and younger adults, as they are at low risk of pneumococcal disease.

Do not get this vaccine if you have had an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or to any ingredient in the vaccine.

If you or your child have a high temperature or feel too unwell to do your normal activities, wait until you're feeling better before having the vaccine.

If you are 65 years or older, clinically eligible, and do not hold one of the above cards the fee of the consultation with the administration of the vaccine is €30.
